_I've felt The Hum. It was in my second year as an English tutor in Hong Kong.
Everyone in class was energetic and focused and just plain loud. People spoke up
and spoke out. Laughter. Jokes. Mistakes. That short hour the most
intense thrill I’d had in years. The students will not remember the
difference between binary opposites and gradable opposites but they will remember
thinking and questioning. I cannot think of better skills to encourage
and reinforce. Moments like this happen rarely, and now that I’ve had a
taste, I want more.
Now that I'm credentialed, I'm working towards a Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language. If there is one thing I’ve seen in my travels, it’s that English is the language of business and therefore the language of power and opportunity. For me, teaching means equipping people with skills and knowledge that will enrich their lives and help them get what they want from the world. I’m also interested in the topic for its own merit. How is English different from other languages? What makes learning English a challenge? How can I make it more accessible to first-timers?
Over the months back in school, I have been working my way around to this conclusion—teaching is hard work, teaching is stressful and teaching is exhilarating. I’m ready to jump into the game. Welcome to my portfolio.
