TPE 8: Learning About Students
_Reading Interest Survey
There are so many ways that I can learn about my students. The artifact that I've included here is a reading interest survey that we gave to our 3rd graders. Among other things, the survey asks them about their favorite book, the book they've read most recently, what makes a good reader and if anyone reads aloud to them. As we review their responses, any answer is a good answer. Not only do we get information about their level of interest in books but we also can see their handwriting, grammar and spelling. Many of the responses to the last question, "what makes a good reader", displayed attitudes in complete opposition to my master teacher's. Many answers said that good readers know all the words and read fast. For my master teacher, a good reader is one who asks questions. From this survey we know that we need to help students redefine "good reader" so struggling readers can adjust their reading strategies. Learning about students' background and capabilities helps me make future lessons age and skill appropriate. |
